Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The text uses 1.5 spacing; uses a 12-point Times New Roman; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); follows the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Author/Date format; uses USA grammar and spelling standards; and places all illustrations, figures, and tables within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

Submissions to PARtake undergo double-blind, peer review. The specificity and challenges of review will depend in large part on the medium of the submission. We accept Articles, Media Explorations, Performance Reviews, and Book Reviews in accordance with the guidelines below.

NOTE ON THE REVIEW PROCESS:

As indicated above, double-blind peer review will be employed as a standard process. Review of works in audio, video, and web- based formats, however, often makes the anonymity of submitting authors impossible. In cases such as these, peer review will still be employed in a way that maintains the utmost objectivity and professional scrutiny.

Our editorial and peer review process aims to have material published within one-hundred and fifty days from the call's submission date. 

Authors and artists retain full copyright ownership of their work (see copyright statement below).

COPYRIGHT STATEMENT:

PARtake supports the Creative Commons project of alternative copyright, which allows authors to keep copyright while inviting certain uses of their work. Authors and artists maintain ownership of their work and allow PARtake to publish it in various digital formats. We ask that authors do not publish in any other web-based formats within one year of publishing in our journal. We also require authors to acknowledge PARtake: The Journal of Performance as Research in the event of any future publication of the same work. Unless stated otherwise on an individual work, everything on PARtake is licensed by the designation below.

Articles

  • Articles have a maximum length of 6000 words excluding endnotes.
  • All citations conform to the rules of The Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Author/Date Format.
  • Grammar and spelling rules follow US standards. Examples include: Punctuation marks inside quotations; use of double quotation marks ("journal") instead of single quotation marks ('journal'); spelling of words that end in "-or" and "-ize" not "-our" and "-ise," etc.
  • A 150-200 word abstract is required.
  • Do not include article title, page numbers, headers, or footers in the document. These will be added by the editors.
  • Submit your manuscript, including tables, figures, appendices, etc., as a single, editable file (Word, Pages, RTF accepted). Please do not submit PDF files during the submission and  editing stage.
  • Page size should be 8.5 x 11 inches.
  • Margins should be 1 inch (top, bottom) and 1.25 inch (left, right).
  • Images should be 5.5 inches in width, centered on the page with titles 1 space below image, left justified.
  • Use 1.5 spacing for final submissions
  • Use a single column layout, justified to the left margin. Final proof versions will be full justified.
  • Font:
    • Main Body—12 pt. Times New Roman.
    • Endnotes and References—12 pt. Times New Roman.
  • Manuscripts that have not been fully proofread for spelling, grammar, and format will be returned to author before being sent to peer review or rejected outright.

Digital Media Explorations

  • We encourage the inclusion of artist statements, and short (1000-2000 word) expository essays that give readers a greater understanding of how your media artifacts act as a form of research. PARtake employs the most restrictive Creative Commons use of copyrighted materials; please note that it is the responsibility of the author to secure and indicate any necessary permissions when using copyright-protected materials. Any digital media submissions or inquiries should have the phrase “Media Submission” and your last name in the email subject line.

  • Audio Projects should be compressed in mp3, m4a, or aac formats, and can be submitted by email, through a file transfer service, or by download link (if stored on a server).

  • Video Projects can be submitted over a file transfer site, Vimeo download, YouTube link, or other download link (if stored on a server). Whenever possible, we will upload video projects to an account held by PARtake on Vimeo. If there are performers in the piece, documented consent from performers is necessary for publication.

  • Web-Based Projects should be placed on a secure server for initial review. The nature of such projects will vary greatly, and the specifics of reviewing and publishing such projects will be determined on a case-by-case basis (which may include migrating content to the PARtake server). Such projects need not be constrained by the formats, margins, and styles of our website unless an agreement between PARtake and the author deems it appropriate.

Performance Reviews

  • 700-2000 words in length and follow the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Author/Date format.
  • We encourage photo documentation of the work with proper permissions granted.
  • Reviewers who submit exceptional material may also be given the opportunity to submit longer review essays, to be published as part of our bi-annual issues.
  • Performance reviews should be previously unpublished in any form (blog, website, etc.) and be about a performance from within the previous six months of submission date.

Book Reviews

  • We will publish reviews of books relevant to performance in general, with specific interest in Performance-as-Research, Performing Arts, Performance Philosophy, Performance and Technology, and Performance Studies, broadly construed. 
  • Additionally, prospective authors may visit our List of Books for Review to find possible titles which might suit their areas of interest and expertise.
  • Book reviews should be 450-800 words and follow the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition Author/Date format.
  • The review heading should include: author, book title in italics, publisher, publication date, page count (including front matter), and purchase price for all available formats, followed by the reviewer’s name and affiliation.
