Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The submission meets CRIL's publishing requirements and acceptable submission types (Working Paper, Advanced Undergraduate Research)
  • The text adheres to length, stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined below (and in the CRIL style guide).
  • The paper has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

Author Guidelines

Thank you for submitting to CRIL! In order to expedite the review process, please ensure you have completed the following two components of the Submission Preparation Checklist:

Please make sure that your paper corresponds to one of our submission types listed below:

  1. Graduate Working Papers: these are typically preliminary scientific papers which may include pre-publication versions of future academic articles, quality research and survey papers (e.g., revised versions of successfully completed prelims, streamlined synthesis exams, expansions to graduate-level term papers and projects, etc.), book reviews, and so on.
  2. Advanced Undergraduate Research: examples include high quality final projects completed in a LING (or related) class, expanded blog posts from LURA recipients, work relating to UROP or independent study with faculty, etc. Undergraduate submissions must be made in consultation with the appropriate research mentor(s) supervising that submission/research project.

Consult the CRIL style guide, and make sure your submission meets CRIL's stylistic and bibliographic requirements:

  • Papers published in CRIL conform to the general formatting standards expected of authors publishing in Language, the flagship journal of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA). Papers submitted to CRIL should adhere to the CRIL style sheet. The CRIL style sheet is nearly identical to that of Language, with slight modifications due to CRIL’s current publication platform. A CRIL Word template (.dotx) is also available to facilitate the formatting process.
  • All working paper submissions should be 5,000 words or less in length (excluding references, figures, appendices, etc.).
  • Please proofread your paper for spelling, punctuation, etc. Furthermore, we encourage authors to consider the possible reactions of their audience to their writing and, in so doing, to choose expository practices and content that is positive, inclusive, and respectful. Please see the LSA’s Guidelines for Inclusive Language for more information.
