Thinking About Art from the Perspective of a Territory

Abstract

This article is part of a research-creation approach, in which practical experience and theoretical reflection feed into one another. First, based on an analysis of my own productions, I offer an introspective assessment and trace the gradual evolution of my approach toward an artistic vision. I then examine the place of African theater in relation to European legacies. The discussion focuses specifically on the search for a dramatic and scenic style capable of articulating traditional African realities with the forms of contemporary Western theater, by exploring possible dialogues between past and present. Finally, with a view to decentering forms, the article proposes a sketch of a new creative gesture, rooted in African cultures and open to renewed forms. The notion of territory is addressed throughout the text, both as a cultural anchor and a method of creation.
