About the Journal

Mission Statement
Palimpsest elevates the profession of academic advising by sharing research, experiences and practices of student affairs and support professionals. This journal is a platform for rigorous quantitative and qualitative research and documents the lived experience of advising through advocacy, authenticity, creativity, innovation, and integrity. We use these values to guide our practice and thoughtfully explore the evolution of our academic advising community.

Vision Statement
Belonging through innovative scholarship.

The History: In May 2021, the Director of Campus Advising Initiatives & Strategy reached out to the Advising and Coaching community with an opportunity to participate in the development and launch of an Advising Journal homed at CU Boulder.

The “Why”: Elevating the profession as scholar-practitioners and co-creating the narrative that defines academic advising resonated within our community. The decision was made by a small and mighty group to move forward and propose a journal that will publish scholarship on a regular basis; provide permanent and transparent forums for our practice; provide space for original research, review articles, book reviews, and impart knowledge to a larger community.

The Title:  Palimpsest: Innovative Works, Transformative Experiences, and Evolving Practices in Student Success and Academic Advising, reflects the fact that advising is an evolving field built on a rich history of predecessors whose tenets draw from a variety of subjects over many centuries.  Fittingly, a palimpsest is writing that bears traces of earlier work but which has been updated and overlain. A work of scholarship and art.

The Journey: Starting in July 2021, with volunteer advisors from several colleges, the journey began.  Over the course of monthly collaborative meetings, the brainstorming and addressing all aspects of this venture happened. The Title; Values underlying the journal; and Mission and Vision statements were proposed, avidly discussed, iterated and approved over the course of several months.

Concurrently, the committee submitted the detailed application to create an Open Access Journal to be hosted through CU Libraries; which was accepted by University Libraries and Provost Russ Moore in early 2022.  The committee (aka the Editorial Board) engaged in training for creating and managing an online journal (where you are now), and developed the appropriate materials – from Creative Commons Licensing, to the structure of the journal and submission criteria and forms.

The journal was introduced to the Academic Advising and Coaching community in February 2022, featuring a logo designed by John Tran. During the spring and summer of 2022 the Editorial Board turned its focus to launching a first issue!
